Ancient Art Forms : Do YOU Know About Yosegi?

Yosegi is a Japanese art form that originated over 200 years ago. Although it is known in many different countries, some artists have commented that in today’s world, the method does not have the global acknowledgement it deserves.

Making use of natural fine grains and textures of wood, the mosaic work is created using timbers of different colors which are then cut into oblong rods of desired sections.

To achieve this detailed effect, wood from many different trees are used, including Cherry, Walnut, and Katsura. Local craftsmen in Yosegi’s hometown, Kanagawa, make the beautiful patterns you see above; cutting different grains of timber and arranging them accordingly, to achieve these beautiful designs.

The products made from Yosegi are usually practical but have become increasingly diverse over time, including posters, cups, chopsticks, intricate boxes and phonograph parts – to name a few. The art form was even used by NOKIA, when the brand released the Aster Vertu product, bringing the process to the internet’s attention in a major way!

There are many similarities between this ancient art form and imondi’s work in the modern day. Both value the rich beauty of timber and, like Yosegi, imondi’s products have been perfected by a dedicated team of craftsmen who are not satisfied with anything but the perfect product.
