Wood Format Specifications
imondi Flooring’s main product range for different format styles is our engineered hardwoods. Consisting of a veneer pressed onto a plywood base, this process allows the wood to breath, adapt and expand through any of our format patterns.
We use the following standards to keep our format patterns high in quality, easy to maintain and for longer life expectancy.
Stability:
Wood has a tendency to expand or contract with changes in the relative humidity and the temperature of the environment in which it is installed. The engineered construction minimizes these expansions and contractions and problems associated with these movements such as cracking, gaps, cupping or bowing. This increased stability also makes engineered floors ideal for tougher installation environments such as basements, waterside installations or environments with under-floor heating.
Dimension:
Due to this increase in stability engineered floors can safely be manufactured and installed in lengths and widths far superior to solid floors made from the same species. Please look at our portfolio for samples of our installations.
Installation:
Engineered floors can be installed using the floating installation method if required. The floating installation method is easier, cheaper and quicker than most other installation methods in common practice.
Environmental:
Engineered floors are more environmentally friendly as the soft wood base portion of the engineered floor is, by definition, made with a more rapidly renewable material than the hardwood veneer.
Equivalent Life-span:
When both engineered and solid floors require sanding for maintenance or restoration purposes, both constructions can only be sanded down to the level of the tongue and groove; after which, by definition, the floor needs to be replaced. Therefore an engineered floor with a hardwood veneer that goes down to the level of the tongue and groove has exactly the same life-span as the equivalent solid floor.

Is this solid or engineered flooring?
Engineered. A reclaimed oak wear layer of 4 or 6 mm is bonded to a plywood base, which gives the stability needed for wide planks, underfloor heating and humid climates.
Can I use European Reclaimed oak with underfloor heating?
Yes. Keep the floor surface at or below 27 °C and follow our underfloor heating guide.
Where does the wood come from?
Oak beams and boards salvaged from European buildings scheduled for demolition, then re-sawn and finished by hand at our factory in Rudong, Jiangsu.
Do you export?
Yes. We supply architects, contractors and importers in more than 30 countries, with offices in Shanghai, Hong Kong and the Netherlands.

What is the difference between the American and European Reclaimed collections?
Both are reclaimed oak. American boards are salvaged from old barns across the United States and are offered in a narrower 95–135 mm width range with a 4 mm wear layer; European barn oak runs up to 270 mm wide with a 4 or 6 mm wear layer.
Is reclaimed oak hard enough for commercial use?
Yes. Reclaimed oak is old-growth timber with a denser grain than new oak, and the engineered construction keeps it stable. We supply it to hotels, restaurants and retail projects worldwide.
Can I match an existing floor or a sample?
Usually. Send a photo or a sample and we will match tone and finish from the colours above or develop a custom finish for project quantities.
Do you ship to the United States and Canada?
Yes. We export worldwide and quote FOB Shanghai or delivered to your port.

What is Venice flooring made from?
Briccole — the oak mooring poles that mark the channels of the Venetian lagoon. They are replaced every few years as shipworm and tides wear them, and we re-saw the sound timber into flooring.
Is reclaimed elm suitable for flooring?
Yes. Chinese elm is hard, strongly figured and stable in our 18 mm engineered construction with a 6 mm wear layer; it is one of our most specified species for hospitality.
Can the elm cladding be used outdoors?
ZOWIE! is designed for interior walls and ceilings. For covered exterior use, ask us about finish options.
Can I combine species in one project?
Yes. Many projects pair Venice oak floors with ZOWIE! elm cladding; we finish both at the same factory so tones are matched.

Is reclaimed pine durable enough for a floor?
Old-growth pine and fir are far denser than today’s plantation softwood, and the engineered construction keeps the boards flat. We specify it for homes, cafes, retail and hotel guest rooms; for high-traffic lobbies we recommend oak or elm.
What are the “Paint” and “Carolina” finishes?
Boards that keep traces of their original painted surface, cleaned and sealed, so each plank carries its own history. No two are alike.
Where does the timber come from?
Houses, farm buildings and factories across China built in the early 20th century, many from Baltic and North American softwood imported at the time.
Can I see it before I order?
Yes. Visit one of our showrooms, or email info@imondi.com for samples.
